न तातो न माता – A Cry of Complete Surrender to Maa Bhavani

Bhavani Ashtakam is a deeply moving Sanskrit hymn dedicated to Maa Bhavani, the supreme Mother Goddess and the compassionate form of Adi Shakti.
This stotra Bhavani Ashtakam is an expression of absolute surrender (शरणागति), where the devotee renounces all worldly identities and dependencies—family, knowledge, wealth, virtue—and declares Maa Bhavani alone as the final refugeBhavani Ashtakam.

Each verse ends with the powerful refrain:

“गतिस्त्वं गतिस्त्वं त्वमेका भवानि”
You alone are my refuge, my path, my destiny, O Bhavani.


Bhavani Ashtakam – Sanskrit Lyrics

श्लोक १

न तातो न माता न बन्धुर्न दाता
न पुत्रो न पुत्री न भृत्यो न भर्ता ।
न जाया न विद्या न वृत्तिर्ममैव
गतिस्त्वं गतिस्त्वं त्वमेका भवानि ॥

भावार्थ (Meaning):
I have no father, no mother, no relative, no giver.
No son, no daughter, no servant, no protector.
Neither wife, nor knowledge, nor livelihood is mine.
You alone are my refuge, O Bhavani.


श्लोक २

भवाब्धावपारे महादुःखभीरु
पपात प्रकामी प्रलोभी प्रमत्तः ।
कुसंसारपाशप्रबद्धः सदाहं
गतिस्त्वं गतिस्त्वं त्वमेका भवानि ॥

Meaning:
Terrified in the endless ocean of worldly suffering,
I have fallen due to desire, greed, and delusion.
Bound by the cruel chains of samsara,
You alone are my refuge, O Bhavani.


श्लोक ३

न जानामि दानं न च ध्यानयोगं
न जानामि तन्त्रं न च स्तोत्रमन्त्रम् ।
न जानामि पूजां न च न्यासयोगं
गतिस्त्वं गतिस्त्वं त्वमेका भवानि ॥

Meaning:
I know neither charity nor meditation,
Neither tantra, nor mantras, nor hymns.
I know not even worship or sacred rituals.
You alone are my refuge, O Bhavani.


श्लोक ४

न जानामि पुण्यं न जानामि तीर्थ
न जानामि मुक्तिं लयं वा कदाचित् ।
न जानामि भक्तिं व्रतं वापि मातः
गतिस्त्वं गतिस्त्वं त्वमेका भवानि ॥

Meaning:
I know not virtue or pilgrimage,
Nor liberation or dissolution.
I know not devotion nor sacred vows, O Mother.
You alone are my refuge, O Bhavani.


श्लोक ५

कुकर्मी कुसङ्गी कुबुद्धिः कुदासः
कुलाचारहीनः कदाचारलीनः ।
कुदृष्टिः कुवाक्यप्रबन्धः सदाहं
गतिस्त्वं गतिस्त्वं त्वमेका भवानि ॥

Meaning:
I am sinful, in bad company, of impure intellect,
A servant of evil habits, devoid of noble conduct.
With impure vision and harsh speech,
You alone are my refuge, O Bhavani.


श्लोक ६

प्रजेशं रमेशं महेशं सुरेशं
दिनेशं निशीथेश्वरं वा कदाचित् ।
न जानामि चान्यत् सदाहं शरण्ये
गतिस्त्वं गतिस्त्वं त्वमेका भवानि ॥

Meaning:
Whether Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, Indra,
Sun or Moon—I know no other protector.
O supreme refuge of all,
You alone are my refuge, O Bhavani.


श्लोक ७

विवादे विषादे प्रमादे प्रवासे
जले चानले पर्वते शत्रुमध्ये ।
अरण्ये शरण्ये सदा मां प्रपाहि
गतिस्त्वं गतिस्त्वं त्वमेका भवानि ॥

Meaning:
In conflict, sorrow, negligence, or exile,
In water, fire, mountains, or among enemies,
In forests—O eternal protector—save me always.
You alone are my refuge, O Bhavani.


श्लोक ८

अनाथो दरिद्रो जरारोगयुक्तो
महाक्षीणदीनः सदा जाड्यवक्त्रः ।
विपत्तौ प्रविष्टः प्रनष्टः सदाहं
गतिस्त्वं गतिस्त्वं त्वमेका भवानि ॥

Meaning:
I am helpless, poor, afflicted by age and disease,
Exhausted, miserable, and ever confused.
Lost in calamities,
You alone are my refuge, O Bhavani.
