Assembly Elections in 2024: Shaping State Politics

The year 2024 brings forth a crucial political juncture for eight Indian states, as they gear up for assembly elections. These elections serve as the cornerstone for shaping each state’s political landscape, dictating the course of governance and policy decisions in the years to come.

Andhra Pradesh: With all 175 seats of the Andhra Pradesh legislative assembly up for grabs before May 2024, the ruling YSR Congress Party, under the leadership of Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, aims to maintain its stronghold following its resounding victory in 2019, where it secured a staggering 151 seats.

Arunachal Pradesh: In April 2024, Arunachal Pradesh, with its 60 assembly seats, will witness electoral battles unfold. Currently governed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led by Chief Minister Pema Khandu, the state also sees a minor presence of the Congress with four seats.

Odisha: Scheduled to conclude its tenure on June 2, 2024, the Odisha legislative assembly elections are slated to take place before this date. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik’s Biju Janata Dal (BJD) looks to maintain its dominance in the state, with the BJP and Congress holding 23 and nine seats, respectively.

Sikkim: In April 2024, Sikkim will witness elections for its 32-member assembly. Currently governed by the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) with Prem Singh Tamang as chief minister, the state’s political dynamics will be put to test once again.

Maharashtra: October 2024 marks the schedule for Maharashtra’s Legislative Assembly elections, boasting 288 seats. The state, known for its complex political landscape, witnessed the formation of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) coalition in 2019 after the Shiv Sena, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), and BJP faced internal conflicts.

Haryana: Ruled by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in alliance with the Jannayak Janata Party (JJP) and independent MLAs, Haryana braces itself for elections around October 2024, setting the stage for intense political competition.

Lok Sabha Election Procedure:

As the states prepare for assembly elections, it’s imperative to understand the intricate procedure of Lok Sabha elections, the bedrock of India’s parliamentary democracy.

  • Election Schedule Announcement: The Election Commission of India (ECI) announces the schedule, including polling phases, vote counting, and result declaration.
  • Voter Registration: Eligible citizens register themselves as voters through various drives conducted by the ECI.
  • Candidate Nomination: Political parties nominate candidates for Lok Sabha seats, submitting nomination papers to the returning officer.
  • Scrutiny of Nominations: The returning officer scrutinizes nomination papers, addressing any objections raised.
  • Withdrawal of Candidature: Candidates can withdraw nominations within a specified period.
  • Polling: Conducted through Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and Voter-Verified Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) machines.
  • Counting of Votes: Votes are counted after all polling phases are completed, supervised by the ECI.
  • Declaration of Results: Results are announced for each constituency, with the candidate securing the highest valid votes declared the winner.
  • Formation of Government: The majority party or coalition forms the government, with the leader becoming the prime minister.
  • Oath-taking: Elected MPs take an oath of office before assuming their roles in the Lok Sabha.

As India braces itself for the electoral extravaganza in 2024, the nation witnesses the democratic spirit in action, shaping the future course of governance and leadership.
